National Bridal Market Chicago: How Sandra D’s Bridal Boutique Selects Your Next Season’s Dresses
There’s something exciting about knowing that the next beautiful wedding gown, mother’s dress, prom gown, or special occasion style coming to Sandra D’s Bridal Boutique may have started with a trip to Chicago.
Every season, we head to National Bridal Market Chicago to shop for the newest styles and carefully select the dresses that will eventually make their way to our boutique in downtown Watertown, Wisconsin.
But this isn’t simply a trip to “go shopping.”
It’s a big part of what makes the Sandra D’s Bridal Boutique experience unique. We spend time researching, planning, looking at trends, talking with designers, considering our brides and customers, and making thoughtful decisions about what we believe belongs in our boutique.
What Is National Bridal Market Chicago?
National Bridal Market Chicago is one of the bridal and special occasion industry’s major trade shows. Held at THE MART in Chicago, the event brings together bridal and special occasion designers and retailers from around the country and around the world.
The market is a trade-only event, meaning it is designed specifically for bridal retailers and industry professionals rather than the general public. National Bridal Market Chicago features hundreds of brands and a wide range of bridal and special occasion categories.
For us, it’s where we get to see what’s coming next in fashion and, most importantly, decide what we want to bring back to Sandra D’s Bridal Boutique in Watertown, WI.
The August 2026 market takes place August 16–18 at THE MART, giving bridal retailers the opportunity to preview and purchase new collections for upcoming seasons.
We Don’t Just Show Up and Start Shopping
One of our favorite parts of preparing for market actually happens before we ever leave Watertown.
We make a list.
We think about the styles we currently have in the store, what our brides have been asking for, what we feel is missing from our selection, and what we believe our customers will be looking for in the upcoming season.
We consider things like:
Wedding dress silhouettes and styles
Necklines and sleeve options
Lace, beading, sparkle and embellishments
Simple and minimalist wedding gowns
More detailed and dramatic bridal styles
Different wedding dress price points
Mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom dress colors
Prom dress styles and colors
Special occasion trends
New designers and collections
Styles that complement the dresses we already carry
That list helps keep us focused.
Because when you’re surrounded by hundreds of beautiful dresses, it would be very easy to fall in love with everything!
But our job isn’t to bring home everything we love. Our job is to find the right dresses for Sandra D’s.
We Shop With Our Brides in Mind
One of the biggest questions we ask ourselves while shopping market is:
“Would our brides love this?”
We think about the women who walk through our doors in downtown Watertown. Some brides are looking for timeless and traditional. Others want something simple and clean. Some want lace from head to toe, while others want sparkle, texture, or a little something unexpected.
We want our selection to give brides options without overwhelming them.
That’s why our buying process is so intentional.
We’re not trying to have hundreds of gowns simply for the sake of having hundreds of gowns. We want to create a curated bridal collection where each dress has a reason for being on our racks.
The same philosophy goes into the other areas of our boutique, too.
When we shop for mother-of-the-bride dresses, mother-of-the-groom dresses, prom gowns and other special occasion styles, we’re thinking about color, fit, style, versatility and what will make sense for the women we serve.
What Happens at Market?
Imagine walking into THE MART in Chicago and seeing bridal fashion everywhere you look.
The National Bridal Market features an open-booth format across multiple floors, with designers showcasing their newest collections and retailers moving from showroom to showroom.
For us, market days are full. We meet with designers and representatives, look at new collections, compare styles, talk about upcoming trends, review pricing and delivery timelines, and look at a LOT of dresses!
Sometimes we know exactly what we’re looking for. Other times, a designer shows us something we didn’t expect to love, and suddenly we realize it fills a gap in our collection perfectly.
That’s part of the fun.
We’re Looking for More Than Just What’s Trending
Trends are certainly part of bridal market, but we don’t want to fill our boutique with dresses simply because they are “in.”
We’re always looking for the balance between current and timeless.
A wedding dress should feel beautiful today, but we also want our brides to look back at their wedding photos years from now and still love what they wore.
That means we look at trends through the lens of our boutique.
Is this style wearable?
Does it offer something different from what we already have?
Will it flatter a variety of brides?
Does it fit the aesthetic of Sandra D’s?
Is the quality there?
Does it make sense for our customers and their budgets?
Those are the kinds of questions that help guide our buying decisions.
The Search for the Perfect Dress Doesn’t End at Market
Once we place an order at market, the excitement doesn’t stop there.
Those dresses still need to be made, shipped and received at our boutique. Then comes the fun part: getting them onto the floor and introducing them to our brides!
So when you walk into Sandra D’s Bridal Boutique and see a new wedding gown hanging on the rack, there is a whole story behind it.
There was the designer who created it.
There was the market appointment.
There was the discussion about the details.
There was the decision about whether it belonged in our collection.
And there was probably at least one moment where we said, “Oh my gosh, our brides are going to LOVE this!”
A Curated Bridal Experience Starts With What We Bring Into the Store
Our goal has always been to provide a personal, welcoming bridal shopping experience right here in downtown Watertown.
Being a small boutique allows us to be selective.
We can think carefully about our inventory and curate a collection that reflects the brides and families we serve throughout Watertown, Milwaukee, Jefferson, Madison, Fort Atkinson and surrounding Wisconsin communities.
That means your experience at Sandra D’s begins long before you arrive for your bridal appointment. It begins with the choices we make when we travel to market.
From Chicago Back to Watertown
