What to Bring to Your Wedding Dress Shopping Appointment
You found your date. You said yes to the venue. Now it's time for the part every bride dreams about, shopping for your wedding dress.
But here's what 35 years of dressing Wisconsin brides has taught us: the appointments that go smoothly aren't the ones with the biggest budgets. They're the ones where the bride was ready to shop for her wedding dress.
So before you head to Sandra D's, here's exactly what to bring and a few things to leave at home.
The Essentials: What to Bring to Your Bridal Appointment
1. Nude or Seamless Undergarments
This is the number one thing brides forget. Bring a strapless bra if you want and nude, seamless underwear. You'll be slipping in and out of gowns, and the right undergarments help every silhouette look the way it's meant to. Bring shapewear if that's something you typically wear, too.
2. A Price Point in Mind
We're here to help you find a dress you love that fits your life. When you're upfront about your budget, we can stop you from falling head-over-heels for a gown that's $500 out of range and start you in styles that will genuinely wow you. If you don’t know a price point, that’s ok. We will guide you and explain the cost of our wedding dresses.
3. Your Wedding Date
This matters more than most brides realize. Bridal gowns typically take 5 to 6 months to special-order. If your date is close, we'll talk about what's available off the rack or check current stock with the designer. Knowing your date up front helps us set realistic expectations from the start.
4. Inspiration Photos
Don’t hesitate to bring photos from Pinterest, screenshots from our website, saved Instagram posts, etc. because all welcome. Just come in knowing that what you love in a photo might look different on your body, and what looks "eh" on a model might be the one that makes you cry happy tears when you're wearing it. We've seen it happen more times than we can count.
5. A Small, Trusted Squad
Bring one to four people whose opinions you genuinely trust and who are there to support you, not their own vision of your wedding. More than four voices in the fitting room tends to pull brides in too many directions and make the experience harder, not easier. This is your moment. Protect it.
6. An Open Mind and Enough Time
Plan for your appointment to take about an hour to an hour and a half. Don't schedule anything right after that will make you feel rushed. Some brides know immediately. Some need to sit with it. Both are completely normal.
What to Leave at Home (Or at Least, Be Aware Of)
A fully fixed idea. Come with direction, not a decree. Some of our brides have walked in saying "only A-line, no lace, nothing strapless" and walked out with a lacey strapless ballgown — in tears, the good kind. You never know which wedding dress will speak to you!
Too many opinions. We love your mom. We love your maid of honor. But if you're bringing everyone, consider a quick family agreement beforehand: you're the tiebreaker, always.
A brand-new spray tan. Give it at least 24–48 hours before your appointment so it doesn't transfer onto our gowns.

Do I need an appointment? Yes, appointments are required so we can give you our full attention. Call us or reach out via our website to schedule.
What sizes do you carry for try-ons? Sample sizing varies by boutique and changes as inventory shifts. Don’t hesitate reach out and ask us what's currently on the floor. We work with all body types and can clip, pin, and help you envision how a gown will look in your size. For the most part, our sample gowns in store range from size 8 to 24.
How many dresses will I try on? As many as it takes to find the right one, within a reasonable range. We'll help guide you so you don't hit decision fatigue and feel overwhelmed.
Should I do my hair and makeup for the appointment? It can help you feel more like a bride, but it's absolutely not required. A ponytail and a clean face work just fine.
Can I take photos? Yes you can! This helps you visualize what you like in photos for your wedding day.
What if I find the dress on the first try? Say yes! There's no rule that says you have to shop around. When you know, you know, and after 35 years, we can tell when a bride has found her dress.
