When Should You Start Shopping for Your Wedding Dress? A Guide from Sandra D's Bridal Boutique in Watertown, WI

If there's one question we hear more than any other at Sandra D's Bridal Boutique, it's this: "Am I too early to start looking?"

After 35 years of helping Wisconsin brides find their dream gowns right here on Main Street in Watertown, we can tell you the best timeline of when to shop for your wedding dress.

Whether you just got engaged last weekend or your wedding is already on the calendar, here's everything you need to know about timing your wedding dress shopping experience at Sandra D's.

The Short Answer: Start 9–12 Months Before Your Wedding

We know that sounds like a long time. But here's the thing about bridal gowns that a lot of brides don't realize until they're in the middle of the process: a wedding dress isn't something you grab off a rack and take home that day. (Well, sometimes it is, but more on that later.)

Most bridal gowns are special-ordered from the designer. From the time we place your order to the time your dress arrives at our boutique, you're typically looking at 5 to 6 months. Then add another 2 months for alterations because almost every dress needs some tailoring to fit you perfectly, not just the sample size. When you add it all up, starting 9–12 months out gives you breathing room, and that breathing room makes for a much more enjoyable experience.

Trust us, shopping for your dress when you're relaxed and excited is a completely different experience than shopping when you're stressed about a deadline.

The Wisconsin Wedding Season Factor

Here in Wisconsin, most weddings happen between May and October and that means bridal boutiques like ours get very busy from January through early spring as brides try to get ahead of their summer and fall wedding dates.

If your wedding is in June, July, or August, here's our honest advice: don't wait until after the holidays to start shopping. The sweet spot is the previous fall, think September, October, or November. You'll have a calmer, more personal appointment, more availability for fittings, and plenty of cushion if we need to special-order something specific for you.

September–November wedding? Aim to start shopping the previous winter or early spring so start in January through April of that same year.

The bottom line: whatever your wedding month, count back 9–12 months from your big day and put "shop for dress" on your calendar right around that time.

But I Just Got Engaged — Should I Wait?

Not at all! In fact, the newly engaged period (those first few weeks after saying yes) is one of our favorite times to welcome a bride into the boutique. The excitement is fresh, there's no pressure, and you have all the time in the world to explore what styles feel like you.

Shopping early also gives you options. You might fall in love with a gown that requires a longer production time, or you might want a specific customization from the designer. The earlier you start, the better.

The one thing we'd say to very newly engaged brides: take a little time to browse styles on our website and on Pinterest before your first appointment, so you have a rough sense of what draws your eye. You don't need to know exactly what you want (that's what we're here for) but having a few starting points gives us a good start to the appointment.

What If My Timeline Is Shorter?

Life doesn't always follow the 12-month plan, and we get that completely. Maybe you got engaged later than expected. Maybe you had a change of venue and moved your wedding up. Maybe you just weren't ready to think about a dress until now.

Here's what we tell brides in that situation: come talk to us before you panic.

At Sandra D's, we always have sample gowns and off-the-rack options available for purchase. These are beautiful, quality gowns that can often be taken home same-day or within a much shorter timeframe.

We've helped brides with 3-month timelines, 2-month timelines, and yes, even a few very memorable last-minute situations. We will always be honest with you about what's possible, and we will always work as hard as we can to get you to the altar looking absolutely stunning.
